1850 Painting of New Brighton, Now for Purchase
Written by Fran Tunno
If you’ve ever looked out your window this time of year and marveled at New Brighton’s beauty, nestled between lush green hillsides, overlooking the tranquil Beaver River, you’re not alone. In the mid-19th century, a landscape and portrait painter named J. O. Osborne did the same thing, then commemorated it in a bucolic painting. It was signed by Osborne in September 1850.
The scene depicts a couple overlooking the town of New Brighton and the Beaver River with the Allegheny Mountains in the background and the alum rocks in the foreground. It is 32” by 46”.
The provenance of the painting is as follows: Joseph McConnell, New Brighton, PA, Lewis McConnell (son), Edith W. McConnell (daughter), William H. McConnell (nephew), Paula McConnell (daughter), Christie’s New York, 16 January 1998 Lot 320.
Could the next owner be you? The painting, titled View of New Brighton, Pennsylvania is currently for sale for $40,000. For more information, visit https://www.kellykinzleantiques.com/view-of-new-brighton-pennsylvania/
