Outstanding Women of New Brighton: Odette Lambert

Odette Lambert

The New Brighton Historical Society has saved Odette Lambert’s “Outstanding Women of New Brighton” article for last. Since it was her idea to feature some outstanding women that have lived in New Brighton or contributed to its growth, she would have never considered herself to be a nominee. However, we believe she is very worthy of this honor. She has done so much for our organization, as well as contributed to many worthwhile projects in our community throughout the years. We know she will be surprised and humbled by us presenting her story and to read this bio about herself, but she deserves to be recognized.

Odette Lambert was born April 6, 1928, in Ellwood City, PA, to the late Jordan and Martha Mancheff. Her parents, both immigrants, encouraged her love of learning through reading, music, and getting involved in cultural things.

She graduated with honors from Lincoln High School in 1946, and she attended Geneva College where she majored in Education. Her first teaching position was in Ellwood City at the age of 19 years old, and her brother was in the fifth-grade class of 50 students she taught. Odette continued teaching school for several years before marrying her husband, Ken, and moving to New Brighton.

It was here where they started their family of five children and became involved in the community. During this time, they also owned a carpet and gift shop in Ellwood City for many years.

Despite being busy with family, Odette always found time to give back to the town she loves and encouraged her children to do the same. She also met many wonderful friends along the way. For her service and volunteer work, Odette was nominated for Beaver County “Woman of the Year.”

When her husband became ill with cancer, Odette cared for him at home until his passing in 1990. She became a widow at the age of 62, but continued to be involved in a variety of activities.

Today, she is 93 years old and has been a resident of New Brighton for over 70 years. She still remains active with various projects and organizations. Odette is so happy to have her five children, twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many dear friends in her life.
